Case Study in Abnormal Psychology Essay

The study of any case in Abnormal Psychology views multiple aspects of self-concept and various behaviors and is the foundation of defining normal and abnormal behaviors. In the complex process of defining and exploring the vast concepts of behavior multi faceted information must be incorporated. Individual behaviors, perspectives, attitudes, and personal identity reveal the internal workings of how specific aspects of life coincide to determine ones concept of normal and abnormal behavior. Throughout history individuals have sought to find out the difference between normal and abnormal perspectives and the purpose for ones existence thus it is only through self realization that society and the people within can find this answer. The exploration of behavior and the many areas that humans search to find a deeper understanding of exactly what the concept of normal behavior leads to a profound investigation of internal and external aspect of life which shapes every angle of one’s self definition. As previous generations have sought to find the answers to this important life question it is the purpose of this paper to continue that great quest into the most definitive goal of society, which is the comprehension of the many, interlinked experiences that define self. The various aspects of behavior and attitudes such as personality traits, abilities, physical characteristics, beliefs, values, goals, and roles help psychologist define normal and abnormal behavior. During the early stages of life children develop an organized and multilevel perspective of information about themselves in the process of acquiring the ability to understand the relation between self and the behavior. Behavior is present in children and centered on many levels of concrete cognitive characteristics, such as physical characteristics and skills. While the focus and perspectives of behavior change from childhood  to middle childhood, behavioral concepts become more integrated and differ as the child engages in social comparison and more clearly perceives the self as consisting of internal, external, and psychological characteristics (Self Concept, 2010). The process of understanding behavior becomes more defined as individuals reach adolescence. It is during this developm ental stage of adolescence that individuals become increasingly aware of the presence and influence of the definition of behavioral characteristic through acquiring a broader perspective of new concepts such as abstract views of the world around them, new experiences with complex issues of cognitive mental representations or self-schemas, which direct the processing of self-relevant information. Social interaction is a key element of behavioral development in which individuals learn foundational skills that aid in the comprehension of self. Through interaction with peers individuals explore or investigate new aspects of self and social interaction by recognizing like interest with peers, social behaviors, emotional responses, and social learning and problem solving skills. These developmental building blocks teach individuals vital insights of self that can be incorporated throughout life such as the development of cooperation, social exchange, demonstrating and understanding empathy as well as experimenting with different roles with behavioral settings. Interaction with society is a defining factor in ones understanding of behavior and is the building block for future and present relationships and definition. Through these various interactions with society integral relationships shape the individuals connection to the world around them and in turn lead to stability within t he internal processes which determine the individual’s perspective of behavioral concept, self esteem, and self efficiency and aids the psychologist in treating an individual with behavioral problems. Definitive concepts that an individual must comprehend in addition to understanding in relation to the hierarchy of normal and abnormal behavior concept in order to understand the complexity of self and the role that individual plays within society. Behavior is by definition the positive or negative reactions to individuals’ society and towards oneself and is viewed as the internal evaluation of one’s self worth and value. It is clear that behavior is one of the fundamental aspects of development and self, a healthy perspective of one’s life must reflect positive values and  definitions of self in order for an individual to develop a healthy mental state. The totality of an individual’s comprehension regarding behavior is a valid developmental concept that must reflect all thoughts and feelings in relation to self and society (Paterson, 2010). Self efficiency describes an individual with confidence in his or her ability to think, understand information, self control, and a defined sense of self worth. It is an important aspect of development of perception to thoroughly understand the impact that these concepts of behavior have on an individual’s life and should be valued as priority (Paterson, 2010). Two distinct experiences that affect personal development are the values of personal beliefs and social factors. In a case study of children’s behavior parents instill values that have shaped the children’s’ perspective of many social and self perspectives. In this case the behaviors displayed by a child growing up in a lower middle class family in rural America was viewed by the parents as abnormal or normal, the child’s behavior in many factors are defined by what he or she has accomplish, and the belief or worth came from validation that he or she needed and that all other aspects of life were just reflections of what society viewed as normality. Over the years many the individuals’ behavior felt as if he or she did not really know that the displayed perspectives of behavior were being viewed as abnormal. Growing up the individual gained a new perspective of exactly what normality was and realized that many of the behaviors displayed were abnormal it was this behavioral awareness that lead to psychological help. When the individual entered high school more abnormal behaviors were displayed and societal definitions determined many of the treatments used by the psychologist. There is no other concept within psychology that shapes individuals as much as behavior. It is in understanding how one’s life is changed based on the situation and experiences, the behaviors and attitudes, and the internal sense of self worth that motivates individuals to step into a deep understanding of life. Illegal Drug Use, Illegal Prostitution, and Money Laundering

The discussion of legalizing certain illegal drug like marijuana for personal use or prostitution to help stimulate the economy is one of the worst ideas ever. It was also said that it will eliminate money laundering problem. By keeping illegal drugs, prostitution, and money laundering illegal will prevent criminals from exploiting the poor and unfortunate people. This will also prevent the â€Å"paid† rape of all genders, it will also detour people from becoming an addict, thus eliminating the increase of money laundering. Over 1200 students was asked to participate in a written survey and interview, the numbers where interesting, 4.0% of the students surveyed that are living with both biological parents reported using illegal drugs compared to 4.9% of the other students living with a single-parent. On another hand preteen living with step family is 9.5% more likely to use illegal drugs (Griesbach et al, 2003). A mysterious boy named Haku finds her and helps her to hide from the spirits. The area turns into a hot bath house for the gods and spirits to replenish themselves. Haku helps her to find a job in the bath house in order for her to stay and finds a way to save her parents. Though the work is hard, and she has to work with monsters in the bath house, she does as well as she can and finally saves her parents. Movies in general must have some elements to be successful. The main purpose of a movie is to make the audience interested. The audience is always looking for bizarre beyond their own lives, so a great movie is the movie that can amaze the audience by taking them to the world beyond their imagination. A great movie is also a movie that the audience will remember after watching it. To make the audience remember a movie, it must have something to think about. That is why a great movie must convey meaningful messages that will make the audience think about and stay in their hearts. Movie is a form of entertainment, so it is undoubtedly that a great movie must succeed in entertaining its audience. A great movie needs to make the audience feels ease in mind and happy after watching it instead of filling audience’s mind with sadness. That is the reason why a happy ending is mandatory. Spirited Away is a great movie with full of imagination. If the audience read a lot of fairy tales, they will feel they are at home while watching Spirited Away. A human is turned into animal because he did something wrong is a familiar motive in fairy tales. In the movie, Chihiro’s parents are turned into pigs because they ate the food without permission. Usually, kids are punished because of their bad behaviors in fairy tales, but this time, in Miyazaki’s movie, adults are punished instead of kids, and the savior is a girl. This is where the imagination of Hayao Miyazaki turns on. The viewers will see the spiritual appears on the screen under the eyes of a girl. Some gods look like animals, and there is a god looks like a blob with a red bowl on his head. The spirits and gods are not scary but very familiar. They look weird, and the viewer might see some of them somewhere in their dreams when they were kids. The bath house is used by gods and spirits, so the employees of the bath house can’t be human. The employees are talking animals. They are working for a cruel witch, who has very big head and body. All those things are somewhere in the viewers’ childhood memory, and Hayao Miyazaki brings them all up onto the screen. Spirited Away also conveys a meaningful message. It is the environmental message. Chihiro’s encounter with a river god early in her bath house career is a good evidence of this. In the movie, Yubaba senses the stink spirit. She immediately evacuates the bath house and then assigns Chihiro to be the stink spirit attendant. Though this is a very difficult job, Chihiro manages to get the stink spirit cleaned. While she is cleaning the stink spirit, she sees a thorn on the stink spirit. She pulls the thorn. It turns out that the thorn is the handle of a bicycle, and there are tons of garbage are coming out of the stink spirit. Astonishingly, the stink spirit is a river god, who is heavily dirtied by the pollution of his river. Later she discovers that Haku is the god of the Kohaku River, and Haku is the one who saved her life when she was a child. This makes the viewers think of the relationship between human and the nature. Human rely to the nature, but they are destroying the nature. This is a meaningful message that will make the audience think about the nature after watching Spirited Away. Spirited Away has a very beautiful ending. No Face is a lonely spirit. He travels place to place without purposes. Finally, he finds a home to stay. He stays with Zeniba to look after her. It is a beautiful ending for a lonely spirit. Chihiro finally saves her parents from Yubaba. She passes the test of Yubaba and breaks the spell. It is a happy ending that all the viewers expect. There is also a happy ending for Yubaba. Her son returns after a journey to Zeniba’s house, and he grows up more after the trip. Haku remembers his name is Kohaku, and he is the god of the Kohaku River. He is no longer under control of Yubaba. For Chihiro, she has grown into a better person for her experience in the spiritual world. Spirited Away is a great movie. Act 1 scene 5 begins peacefully and with excitement through a group of servants cleaning up after a meal the guest had. The excitement of the running and the bickering between the servants allows Shakespeare to emphasise the importance of the scene also adding the atmosphere of tension. This scene also starts with a jolly theme which is portrayed through Capulet the head of the Capulet house who is also the host of the masked ball. Capulet is in a welcoming mood and is also being nostalgic about his past and how you and I are past our dancing days. Capulet also adds some humour to the start of the scene by commenting on the ladies for not dancing and not having a good time, humorously encouraging them into dancing by teasing them. Capulet then jokes around and explains that Ah, Ha, my mistresses, which of you all indicating that all his guests have corns on their feet. This small act within the scene creates a humorous atmosphere with clownish behaviour through the character of Capulet. There is also a small rushed piece of excitement when Capulet asks his servants to make space and fore some more light. This creates an image of the scene being bright and full of colour ad further on within this scene becomes dark and miserable. The Capulet ball is masked ball; this has great significance to the scene. The reason is that the guests that have arrived have a hidden identity and therefore can only be by what the person could be wearing. The person behind the mask is likely to be found by what the person could be wearing or by what the individuals voice is. Taking into consideration what the history it would be normal if Tybalt said This by voice should be a Montague. This interruption will allow the audience to feel tension of murder and the conflict between the two families and what fate will this have for the two young lovers. This tension rises due to the presence of Capulet. This is accomplished by the description of Romeo that is given by Capulet a well governed youth, thus raising the image of Romeo in the audiences eyes. The presence of Capulet also lowers the image of Tybalt in the view of the audience; this is accomplished by Capulet by deliberately humiliating by explaining to Tybalt that his position is goodman boy. Tybalt humiliation is continued by the existence of Capulet. This humiliation that Tybalt is having to face is due to disturbance that Tybalt was trying to create among the guest due to the anger upon Romeo. After Tybalts rendezvous with Capulet the atmosphere is filled with rage. However it is soon filled with romance and religion. The picture that this sonnet creates shows an untainted connection between the two young lovers. This is achieved using pure sacred expressions like a shrine. the character of Romeo describes Juliet hand to be this shrine that he profanes, upon, using his lips to travel to the hands of Juliet as a pilgrim would, as he gives her his rough touch with a tender kiss. She responds, as the good pilgrim shall not do wrong much, the reason being that pilgrims, have the palms that are for the saints to touch, known as the holy palmers suitable greeting know as the kiss. The scene begins with humour, laughter and this happy party atmosphere. Capulet is the main source to these joyful few moments by commenting on the women that shall not dance. The colourful atmosphere that has already bean created is then transformed into romance through Romeos initial sighting of the first real love of his life. This then leads to a sighting that brings darkness through the egotistic cousin Tybalt. Tybalt has introduced anger to the scene. He carries extreme rage toward the other family. Capulet intervenes and gives Tybalt his marching orders and settles the scene down where the romance shall spur again through a sonnet. Sadness is then evident as the realisation of identities creates heartbroken and dismayed feelings for both the young lovers. Through all these up and downs the audience can feel involved and feel the tension. This plays shocks the modern society as in this day and age we have yet to encounter two families that crave the others blood to this extreme. The situation of a young girl does not affect the audience that much as this age gap that they face is a normal occurrence but the age that they are facing is unusual as at they age that they are in they should enjoy themselves.

Boston Massacre John Hancock stated ?Let this sad tale of death never be told without a tear; let not the heaving bosom cease to burn with a manly indignation at the barbarous story . . .? during his oration of the massacre on 5 March 1774. The ?Boston Massacre? as it was called, was really not a massacre in the sense that a lot of people were slaughtered, it was a massacre in the sense that British government's authority was not to be tolerated. During the next eighteen months, tensions between the Colonists and the British would increase. On a cold morning in February 1770, eleven-year old Christopher Seider was one of several hundred adults and youths surrounding the house of ebenezer Richardson. Richardson was a known Tory informer for the British customs commissioners. Mob demonstrations protesting the Townshend Acts were common, some spontaneous and some organized. At Richardson's house the crowd was becoming unruly and started breaking windows and one stone thrown hit Richardson's wife. Richardson grabbed an unloaded musket and shoved it through one of the broken windows. Seeing the musket just seemed to add fuel to the fire and the crowd knocked down the front door. Richardson loaded and fired into the mob fatally wounding Seider who died that evening. Four days after Sieder's funeral, a British soldier named Thomas Walker of the 29th Regiment inquired about a job at John Gray's Ropewalk. It was common for a British soldier to moonlight while off duty to supplement their incomes. Ropemaker William Green told Walker ?to go clean the outhouse?. In response to the insult, a fistfight broke out between Walker and Green . Walker was beaten very badly and when he had the chance ran and enlisted some of his British peers into the fight. The fray was renewed and the soldiers were bested again. The only advantaged to either side gained from the altercation was a few aches and pains. On Monday 5 March 1770, Private Hugh White of the 29th Regiment was on guard duty at the sentry box on King Street near the Custom House. Being that the King's taxes and gold were secured at the Custom House made this sentry duty all the more high risk to the British. Captain Goldfinch, an officer of the 29th Regiment, was being taunted by several citizens for not paying his bills to local merchants. Private White recovering from the skirmish the previous night was not going to let the hooligans bother Captain Goldfinch. In response to the insults, Private White butt-stroked a teenager by the name of Edward Garrick. Over fifty townspeople started to gather and challenge both White and Goldfinch to fight. As the crowd began to get larger, the British soldiers realized that the situation was about to explode. Captain Thomas Preston's account of the massacre is the only official report on the events of the fifth of March 1770. Captain Preston, Officer of the Guard, heard that a crowd had formed in front of the Custom Hose and that the guards were hollering for help. According to his account of the incident Preston stated ?That he immediately rushed to the Custom House and formed his men in formation to prevent any harm to the guards and or destruction to the guard post.? Captain and his men then fixed bayonets and began to poke and prod the mob away from the post. He then tried to march his men back to the security of their barracks, but the crowd would not allow them to do so. Tory supporters yelled from all around the street for the soldiers to fire their weapons. Preston tried to disperse the crowd while cat calls such as ? Fire and be damned? were yelled at the British soldiers. In the mean time, Captain Preston was ordering his soldiers ?Don't fire, Don't fire? The fuse was lit when a stick flew from the crowd and hit Private Montgomery in the face. Montgomery enraged leveled his musket and fired into the crowd.
