The Hole In The Net :: essays research papers

Our social security net has a gap in it. The strands of the net are rotting; the opening is getting greater. More individuals are failing to work out, what's more, the individuals with the least quality are holding the majority of the weight. Three to 4,000,000 Americans are destitute as indicated by the U.S. Branch of Housing and Urban Development, 5.5% can't secure positions as indicated by the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, and the figure is finished twice that in the 20-multi year mature age gathering, as indicated by the Department of Education. A thin minority of these individuals are drawing off the framework, however by far most simply had a terrible break. Such is the account of Peter and Megan, as told by creator Jonathan Kozol in his Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Book Award victor Rachel and Her Youngsters: Homeless Families in America. Dwindle was a woodworker and she was a homemaker who brought up their five youngsters. They lived in a flawless, average workers high rise in New York City. Dwindle did development for open lodging ventures, and had a huge swath of specialized abilities and apparatuses: â€Å"I did carpentry. I painted. I could do decorating. I earned a living. We went through Sundays strolling with our kids on the beach.† It might seem like this was a cheerful family, living the American Dream. Maybe they were - they were self adequate for the entirety of the 12 years that they had been hitched, they had a consistent pay, a nearby and adoring family, a home, and a possibility for their kids to show improvement over they had done. At that point the fire struck. They came hustling home in the wake of hearing the news, just to find that everything had been decimated. The youngsters lost their pet canine and feline, Megan lost her grandmother’s china, however Peter maybe lost the most: his apparatuses. Since the fire, he has not had an occupation, in light of the fact that a craftsman without apparatuses should not have eyes. He clarified that for each activity he had, he would add another apparatus to his assortment. Be that as it may, they all went up in the burst. When Kozol initially met them, they were living in a government assistance lodging in New York, where they had been living for a long time. They can’t get out on the grounds that government help programs (otherwise called government assistance) disclose to them that their family limit for a condo is $366 per month - this with seven relatives living in New York City. (In correlation, that’s about the absolute bottom cost for seven days in a New York City one room inn.) In their two room â€Å"apartment†, the whole spot is falling

Development of Ophelia in Hamlet Essay

William Shakespeare in the play â€Å"Hamlet† builds up the character of Ophelia in three novel stages. At first, Ophelia is depicted as an ordinary and loyal character. As the play advances, she falls frantically enamored and at last goes crazy. Ophelia advances a negative way as the plot of the play proceeds onward. In the start of the play Ophelia is portrayed as the ordinary, respectful girl. Laertes discloses to Ophelia that regardless of whether Hamlet says he adores her, he may not be coming clean. After Laertes speaks, Ophelia regards the individual information on connections that he brings to the table. Ophelia acknowledges his discourse and â€Å"shall the impact of this great exercise keep as guard to [her] heart† (I, III, 48-49). Ophelia tuned in to Laertes’ exhortation and submissively acknowledges his direction. Moment’s later Ophelia’s father, Polonius, demands that Ophelia quit seeing Hamlet. Accordingly, Ophelia says, â€Å"I will comply, my Lord† (I, III, 140). Polonius’ word seems, by all accounts, to be of significance when Ophelia reacts in such a consistent way. Essentially, Ophelia is deciphered as a respectful high school young lady, anyway this portrayal before long changes. In spite of the fact that Laertes and Polonius attempt to guide Ophelia the correct way, she winds up falling nonsensically enamored with Hamlet. Ophelia’s express submission leaves her defenseless against the maltreatment of Hamlet, who blames her for being unfaithful and tricky. Ophelia claims that Hamlet â€Å"took [her] by the wrist and held [her] hard† (II, I, 97). In spite of the fact that Hamlet genuinely mishandles Ophelia, her affection for him is more grounded than him abusing her. While Hamlet reveals to Ophelia that his affection for her has left, she is in absolute stun and disappointment. Ophelia reacts with â€Å"O eminent forces, reestablish him!† (III, I, 153). Ophelia can hardly imagine how Hamlet no longer loves her and wishes that he would adore her again. Her affection is plainly devouring all her considerations. In spite of the fact that Hamlet no longer loves Ophelia she can't acknowledge or adapt to this reality and the pressure at last pr ompts her passing. After Ophelia understands that Hamlet no longer has affections for her, she goes crazy. Ophelia sings a disgusting melody about a lady who is fooled into losing her virginity with a bogus guarantee of marriage. While Ophelia is skipping around singing her silly melody, she relates her tune to Hamlet. Ophelia says, â€Å"Quoth she, before you tumbled me, you guaranteed me to wed† (IV,V,62-63). Ophelia felt that they would get hitched and she accepted that Hamlet was unquestionably going to propose to her. Afterward, Ophelia fell into the water and suffocated. The Queen shouts out and says, â€Å"Till that her articles of clothing, overwhelming with their beverage, pulled the poor miscreant from her resonant lay to sloppy death† (IV,VII,196-198). As opposed to attempting to spare herself, she latently let herself suffocate on the grounds that she didn’t care to keep living without Hamlet. At long last, Ophelia’s feelings controlled her, and these negative fe elings prompted her end. Ophelia creates through the span of the play in various manners. At first she is devoted and typical, and later transforms into a young lady constrained by adoration and in the long run she ends it all. Ophelia is a unique character that changes all through the play. Her visually impaired enthusiasm for Hamlet makes her lose the capacity to think or act judiciously. Life, to her, is good for nothing without him, and she picks demise over life. Ophelia most likely advanced through the play in a negative way.

Reaction Paper in Opening Bank Account Essay

Opening ledger today would appear to be so natural. We can undoubtedly benefit of a wide scope of store items that answer our requirements for more prominent openness to our assets, esteem included highlights, serious rates and comfort. After opening a record to the bank (RCBC), the bank gave me an enrollment structure that incorporates subtleties and some fundamental data about my character. Truly, I think that its uncomfortable to top off those structures due to heaps of data it requires. In any case, I simply used to imagine that the explanation behind this is to ensure them and to agree to an assortment of banking guidelines. Beside marking the data sheet, the bank likewise expects me to sign their financial terms and understandings which just imply that I need to stand to specific guidelines and acknowledge duty regarding certain activities. Like different banks, the RCBC additionally offers ATM card known as MyWallet card. This across the board card permits us to appreciate ele ctronic financial accommodation whenever, anyplace and it will permit us to do exchanges like a customary ATM card: withdrawals, cashless shopping, balance request and bills paymentall these, without the problems of keeping a month to month looking after parity. In addition, no punishment will be charged regardless of whether would pull back all the cash in our record. For me, this is extremely worthwhile particularly for us as an understudy who just have restricted financial plan and remittance for reserve funds. Likewise, having financial balance is extremely advantageous. For instance, in the event that I have a financial balance, I can without much of a stretch take care of tabs utilizing ATM. Its likewise less expensive than purchasing a cash request (and I will have confirmation of bank proclamations that I took care of my tabs). In the event that I get an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) or platinum card for the record, I can pull back cash effectively or make installments at s tores since a check card is typically acknowledged for buys anyplace Mastercards are acknowledged. I can say that opening a ledger is an open door for me to figure out how to oversee budgetary viewpoints particularly sooner rather than later if Im effectively an expert.

War of Talent in Globalization Essay Example for Free

War of Talent in Globalization Essay Today, with various changes occurring on the planet, one thing has become an unmistakable reality that nations have changed their arrangements and standard on account of expanding floods of universal rivalry. Ability chase on the global scale is something pretty much each and every country, particularly the created world, is aware of. The opposition to chase ability for the neighborhood economy is exceptional to such an extent that nations like Germany, renowned for its custom fear for movement, have demonstrated tendency to draw in outside individuals to their nation. Besides, nations like China and Korea have begun working a similar way. Australia and Canada can be set in the principal column of the race, however. This chase for ability has gotten quick in the current occasions however it isn't something new. As indicated by David (2006) around 70% experts working in science and designing branch of U. S. are locals of non-OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) nations. Also, an extraordinary segment of exile experts that go to the OECD are from creating nations. About portion of the all out understudies in OECD nations are from the creating scene. It is evaluated that nearly in each 10 tertiary instructed adults, who was conceived in the creating scene, was living in U. S. Australia, Canada, or Western Europe in the year 2001. As appeared by investigations of World Bank and IMF, there is high connection between's capable individuals with sound training and legitimate relocation. The pace of lawful taught transients is 4% higher now than it was ten years prior (37% and 33% individually). Besides, exceptionally talented workers’ movement is another segment of the pie that is picked by the created world. For models, around 600,000 exceptionally talented experts work outside their local nation, at some random second, on impermanent visas. The quantity of understudies (the two people) learning at graduate and under-graduate level abroad has additionally nearly multiplied now (1. 6 million) when contrasted with 20 years back. This is all in light of the fact that worldwide atmosphere for financial fighting has changed. For instance, as indicated by World Bank’s improvement explore group’s chief L. Alan Winters, overall movement of individuals to the OECD nations is to life up by and large government assistance of the world. On the off chance that these nations increment movement by 3%, the world government assistance would develop by 150 billion dollars which would be a vastly improved addition than evacuating a wide range of limitations on exchange exercises; and profoundly gifted laborers come in the most full of feeling class of this expansion in relocation . As indicated by the creator such terms as cerebrum channel, war for ability ought to be disposed of by the whole world on the grounds that there is a progressively positive methodology that the whole world can take of such projects as high-gifted relocation (HSM), in light of the fact that by such projects all the nations can commonly profit by trade of information. Despite the fact that it is correct that less evolved nations are more in question of misfortune by programs like HSM, the world ought to make a domain where positive-total can profit all. What is a state of relapse here to the current essayist is that either is it the mark of HSM or war for ability, one thing is very certain that created nations are pulling in experts to their properties to their benefit. At that point, I should ask, how is it conceivable to relinquish such terms as speak to the circumstance unmistakably? One greater difference that I would raise here is that David (2006) has given the present image of what's going on the planet with respect to ability, how, at that point, would it be able to be levelheaded to be just envision that the more impressive nations would start endeavors by which creating world can profit? In spite of the fact that this is on the right track to realize thoughts how the world ought to be yet avoiding the truth is increasingly risky. For instance, the essayist himself presents the instance of Africa and Caribbean where instructive framework and human services have been burrowed out. In this way, to me war of ability hold completely great in today’s setting of globalization and ought to be alluded to any place fundamental.

Autism Spectrum Disorder During Adolescence - Free Essay Example

Adolescence is a challenging part of growing up . From entering high school , to hitting puberty, every teen goes through their own struggles during adolescence. Teens with Autism , have to encounter the same situations as other teens, from handling a ton of homework, to figuring out which friends to hang out with. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) , is a neurodevelopmental disorder that impairs the ability to socialize, and interact with others. Autism is a lifelong condition, that is most often detected in early childhood. ASD affects the nervous system , and while there is no exact answer as to what causes ASD , scientists believe it is due to a faulty gene passed onto the child , in early fetal development. There are other theories on what causes ASD , such as viruses the mother encountered, and chemical imbalances. When a person is diagnosed with Autism, they are placed on a spectrum , the â€Å"A Spectrum† , determines whether the person is High functioning, meaning their cognitive skills are not challenged, as much as a person a person who is considered low functioning . Low functioning Autism , is the most severe end of the spectrum. A person with low Functioning Autism has severe impairments to their cognitive skills. The main difference that separates where a person lands on th e spectrum , is based off their cognitive skills , and their IQ level. Everyones body changes during Puberty , and while most neurotypical teens are excited to experience this stage in their life , teens with Autism are most often alarmed , and upset, by the sudden changes to their lives . Puberty brings on many obstacles in a teenagers life, from having your body go through changes , not only physically , but also emotionally. Change is often a problem for autistic teenagers , because they are accustomed to a set schedule , and routine . Having a set routine, helps Autistic individuals create a stable order in their lives. While a neurotypical teenagers can deal with the morning rush of getting ready and heading off to school in a rush, an Autistic teenager will become overwhelmed by the interruption in their set order . When an Autistic individual relies on a set routine, it helps motivate them to follow through with tasks , which helps them deal with tasks such as doing their chores, or focusing on their homework. When that routine is interrupted , it upsets, overwhelms , and agitates people with autism, which makes it harder for them to get through their day with a positive mindset. Small things like having to pick up dinner last minute , because mom did not have time to finish the dinner she planned for the family that specific night, is just one thing that can upset a person with Autism. Having to know what is for dinner during the week, or what socks to wear with a specific outfit , even having to wear blue s neakers on Tuesday , are all examples of mannerisms that people with Autism do to help manage anxiety, and ADHD, because it helps decrease their impulsivity, and aggression . When a neurotypical individual has their schedule messed up , it also upsets, and agitates them, but they are faster to comprehend that they can still go throughout the day , even though it did not go exactly as planned , while an autistic person will most often become thrown off for the rest of their day. Making friends , and meeting people that you are attracted to are all parts of being a teenager, and trying to fit in , is one of the biggest struggles every single person encounters in high school. While trying to find friends that are genuine , and accept you can be hard , but it is even harder when someone has trouble understanding social cues . Studies show that students with autism are more likely to be excluded by their peers , because students do not typically reach out to introverted people, and they are less likely to talk to people outside of their friend group. Autistic teens have trouble finding friends, because they have a harder time picking up on social cues, and they typically refrain from reaching out to their peers, because they do not know how to communicate with them. Neurotypical individuals generally have an easier time making friends, and fitting in, because they have an easier time understanding social cues such as â€Å"kidding around†(Joking), or sarcasm. Going to the movies, football games, parties, and hanging out late at night at a fast food restaurant , are all things teenagers enjoy doing with the little bit of freedom their parents give them . Some Teenagers also look forward to sneaking around behind their parents backs to go to a party that their crush is throwing. These are all things that Autistic teenagers do not typically get to encounter, because they do not handle large crowds well (Due to loud noises and large groups of people, it becomes scary and overwhelming), they like to stay in a comfortable â€Å"zone† that includes following their routines, which include mom and dads house rules.Because Autistic individuals have a tough time comprehending cognitive skills, they may not understand why some teenagers laugh ,and smile when they are in class raving about the party they got drunk at saturday night , or going out passed curfew on friday night to drink your first beer with your friends. People with Autism, want to be treated just like everyone else, and they want to genuinely feel included by their peers. Just because a person is Autistic , does not mean that they cannot hang out with their friends, join the schools sports team, or go on a date with the person that they like. It is important to remember that everyone on the spectrum is different , so telling an autistic person something like, â€Å" my friends brother has Autism† , is not a very good conversation starter , because every person on the spectrum is vastly different from the next. Growth, Confusion, and the Loss of Innocence The Differing Roles of Childlike Narration in Roys The God of Small Things and Faulkners The Sound and the Fury - Literature Essay Samples

One, a story about culture, class, family, and love laws, follows the lives of a pair of twins in Kerala, India as they learn one fateful December day how drastically Things Can Change in a Day. The other, a story about suicide and incestual desire, tells of the fall of the Compson family from four different perspectives. How can these two seemingly different novels The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner and The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy possibly be related? In both novels, the reader finds himself reading a childlike account of the events that come to pass through the course of the novels. The lack of insight, limited use of modifiers, and simplistic sentence structure of Benjys section and the phonetic spelling, whimsical adjectives, and interspersed lines of childrens songs of The God of Small Things both serve to present the reader with childlike descriptions of the stories. However, they differ not only in the level of insight reached by each of the narrato rs by the conclusion of the novels, but also in the purpose of the childlike descriptions. In contrast to Benjys childlike narration that creates a sense of confusion within the reader that parallels his confusion, the childlike quality of Roys narration sophisticatedly creates a lightheartedness that starkly contrasts against the heavy tone and serious nature of the material, thus representing the gap between innocence and corruption. While Roy and Faulkner both present the reader with childlike renditions of the events, they approach and accomplish this task through differing methods. Faulkner chooses to tell the section April Seventh, 1928 from the viewpoint of a mentally-challenged thirty-three-year-old-man. He writes simplistically: Luster had some spools and he and Quentin fought and Quentin had the spools. Luster cried and Frony came and gave Luster a tin can to play with, and then I had the spools and Quentin fought me and I cried (Faulkner 19). Within the span of two se ntences, Benjy repeats the word spools three times, the verb fought two times, and the verb cried twice. There is no variation; he simply reuses the same word repeatedly when there are a plethora of synonyms that could easily have been substituted in its place. In addition, he only provides the reader with the bare essential facts necessary to formulate an understanding of the event. He gives the subject and the verb, but there are no adverbs and only a few adjectives. What color are the spools? What are they made of? These questions could easily be answered with the addition of a few adjectives, but adjectives are scarce in Benjys section. The limited vocabulary, virtual absence of modifiers, and simplistic sentence structure of Benjy categorizes his writing style as being characteristic of a child, for it lacks the sophistication usually associated with the more mature writing of an adult. Consisting mostly of nouns and verbs, his account of the events that pass does not e xtend beyond the mere reporting of the actions he witnesses and experiences. The lack of proper punctuation serves to portray his narration as a report. Luster asks Benjy: Aint you going to help me find that quarter so I can go to the show tonight (Faulkner 3). While the proper punctuation here should be a question mark, the end of the statement is punctuated with a period; this substitution flattens the speech so that there is no evidence of voice inflection or emotion. This flattening of speech shows that Benjy cannot distinguish between a question and normal speech it is all the same to him. Thus, he is only able to report what he hears. Similarly, although he describes what he sees, he does not possess the capability to interpret the actions. For example, the novel opens with a scene in which the children are playing. Benjy describes: Then they put the flag back and they went to the table and he hit and the other hit (Faulkner 3). Although the word hit is a transitive verb, he uses it intransitively. Never does he mention what they are hitting the direct object or what the game is. It is only when Luster says Here, caddie' does the reader know that they are playing golf (Faulkner 3). Because of Faulkners decision to tell the story from the viewpoint of a mentally-challenged individual, the reader experiences the events as if he were looking through the eyes of a child. In contrast to Faulkners choice of simplicity, Roy incorporates phonetic spelling, whimsical adjectives, and interspersed lines of song into the narration to give it a childlike quality. Phrases such as Their Prer NUN sea ayshun was perfect and cheerful chop-chop-chopping cue the reader that the narrator is a child (Roy 147, 121). But it is interesting that the childlike quality conveys the message more effectively than if it had been absent. For example, in Their Prer NUN sea ayshun was perfect, the phonetic spelling of the word pronunciation emphasizes the pronunciation of the word, for it is only by saying Prer NUN sea ayshun aloud that the reader is able to realize that the broken group of syllables refers to the word pronunciation. By the time the reader finishes reading the word aloud, she has been forced to pause from the normal act of reading and finds herself engaged in a study of pronunciation of the word pronunciation, much like the manner in which they study pronunciation. Thus, the form in which the word is presented to the reader reinforces the content. And in cheerful chop-chop-chopping, the lengthening of the word chopping into chop-chop-chopping creates a sing-song quality that portrays the act of chopping as being cheerful, thus reiterating the adjective that precedes it; in other words, the style reinforces the content. Roy also uses whimsical adjectives as well. When the narrator describes a tune that Mammachi plays on her violin, she describes it as A cloying, chocolate melody. Stickysweet, and meltybrown. Chocolate waves on a chocolate shore (Roy 174). This metaphor may seem like nonsense at first, for what can chocolate possibly have in common with a melody? But it is not nonsensical, for both are rich; one is rich in taste while the other is rich in sound. Furthermore, it is fitting to describe the sound as a chocolate wave not only because sound resonates when the perfect pitch is attained, but also because sounds physically are waves that travel through the air. And to further elaborate upon the metaphor, as chocolate melts in ones mouth, one can melt into the music as one relaxes and surrenders oneself to the swirling melodies that envelop its listeners. In addition, the interspersed lines of childrens songs throughout the work contribute to the childlike quality of the writing. As Rahel climbs up the stairs with Baby Kochamma, she sings the song Popeye the Sailorman and fills in Dum Dums whenever there are pauses. The interspersed lines of childrens songs, cheerful alliteration, and phon etic spelling that can be found throughout the narration all contribute to the formation of a playful, lighthearted, relaxed tone that portrays the innocence of childhood. However, while both narrations are childlike in their own manner, the childlike qualities serve different purposes in each novel. Faulkners decision to write Benjys section in the form of stream of consciousness and the lack of transitions between the rapid switching of scenes creates a sense of confusion within the reader. As the reader tackles the first page of the novel, he encounters the following passage: Cant you never crawl through here without snagging on that nail. Caddy uncaught me and we crawled through (Faulkner 3). The two statements are obviously connected, for both are about Benjy being snagged on a nail, but the characters have changed. Where is Luster, and where does Caddy come from? The change in characters is the only clue that there has been a switching of scenes. That both scenes address t he common topic of Benjy being snagged on a nail makes it difficult to notice that one sentence belongs to the narration of one scene while the other is related to an entirely different one the switching of scenes is cleverly disguised. In reality, the first sentence takes place in the present, but the second takes place on December 25th, a day when Caddy and Benjy delivered a letter to Mrs. Patterson. Thus, the free association among the past and present experiences that Benjy makes confuses the reader so that the reader can properly focalize through the narrator by identifying with Benjys confusion. Benjys retardation prevents him from perceiving his surroundings as normal people do. Benjy blurs the boundaries between present reality and the past, so it is only fitting that the reader has difficulty distinguishing between the past and present, as Benjy does. Constantly throughout the novel, he lacks an awareness of his surroundings and of himself. Repeatedly, he doesnt real ize that its cold and has to have others tell him to put his hands in his pockets. The reader finds out about Benjy from cues of those around him. For example, through the phrase What are you moaning about, Luster said, the reader finds out that Benjy has been moaning (Faulkner 5). The reader is not provided with any information that Benjy himself does not have; she learns as Benjy learns. Since Benjys understanding of the events around him is minimal, the reader is provided merely with disordered fragments of information with which he has to struggle to piece together to form an understanding of the situation. Thus, the writing style of Benjys section creates confusion within the reader that parallels Benjys confusion that results from his diminished mental abilities.Unlike Faulkner, Roy uses the childlike narration not to parallel a particular character, but to create a stark contrast between the playful lightheartedness of the tone and the seriousness of the material under d iscussion. The day that the Orangedrink Lemondrink Man molests Estha, Estha has difficulty sleeping at night because he feels nauseous. Roy describes: Estha Alone walked wearily to the bathroom. He vomited a clear, bitter, lemony, sparkly, fizzy liquid. The acrid aftertaste of a Little Mans first encounter with Fear. Dum Dum (Roy 113). Taken by itself, the phrase Dum Dum conveys a feeling of finality and portrays the seriousness of the situation. However, looking at the phrase in the context of the novel, the reader is forced to acknowledge that it is the same phrase that is in Rahels version of Popeye the Sailorman. Because of its origins in the song, the phrase carries with it a lightheartedness that starkly contrasts against the seriousness of Esthas situation. That this phrase that adds humor to the childrens song is found at the end of this passage is unacceptable and cruel. It is a deliberate defiance, for its placement dramatically portrays the loss of a childs inno cence after he has been exposed to the cruel world. Estha had gone outside of the theatre so that he could joyfully sing a song from The Sound of Music in peace without disturbing anyone, but instead of experiencing the expected joy and delight from singing, he encounters Fear. What was lost that day can never be recovered. Thus, it is a statement about the cruel, corrupt world that steals away the innocence of its children. It is in this word that Estha suffers, an unsympathetic world in which while a child vomits out of disgust and fear, his mother ironically is smiling from pleasant dreams a few doors down the hall. The two narrators also differ in that while one grows in maturity and knowledge of the world, the other remains stagnant. The last paragraph of Benjys section begins as follows: Father went to the door and looked at us again. Then the dark came back and he stood black in the door, and the door turned black again (Faulkner 48). The simple structure, limited use of modifiers, and limited vocabulary characteristic of the style of Benjys section at the onset of the novel are still present in his narration at the end of his section in the novel. That his writing style has not changed shows that his level of maturity and knowledge of the world have not increased in any way.In contrast, the changing use of language and depth of insight of the narrator in The God of Small Things signal to the reader that the narrator has matured as a result of the events of the novel. An example of the changing use of language and development of insight is in the use of the phrase Dum Dum to signal that a lesson has been learned. The first time the narrator uses the phrase outside the context of the Popeye song is when the narrator responds to Ammus question of whether Rahel had learned her lesson yet. The narrator answers: Rahel had: Excitement Always Leads to Tears. Dum Dum (Roy 94). The first lesson learned is one of books, but as the story progresses, the Dum Dum phrases are encountered after life lessons are learned. For example, when the twins discover Sophie Mol is dead and come to the realization that they might go to jail, that realization is followed by a Dum Dum. And again when they witness the bloody death of Velutha, they learn two lessons: one, that Blood barely shows on a Black Man (Dum Dum), and two, It smells though, sicksweet. Like old roses on a breeze (Dum Dum) (Roy 293). The shift in placement of the Dum Dum phrases from after book lessons to after life lessons shows that they are acquiring more knowledge of the world and are becoming more mature. Moreover, this growth can also be seen through a comparison of the interpretations offered by the narrator of the same scene at different points in the novel. Towards the beginning of the novel, the twins witness a scene where a policeman taps the breasts of Ammu with his baton. The narrator responds by saying that Inspector Thomas Mathew seemed to know whom he could pick on and whom he couldnt. Policemen have that instinct (Roy 10). The twins only see that the Inspector is humiliating their beloved mother, and so they think that the policeman is mean. However, when this scene is revisited later on in the novel, the narrator states: Later, when the real story reached Inspector Thomas Mathew, the fact that what the Paravan had taken from the Touchable Kingdom had not been snatched, but given, concerned him deeply. So after Sopie Mols funeral, when Ammu went to him with the twins to tell him that a mistake had been made and he tapped her breasts with his baton, it was not a policemans spontaneous brutishness on his part. He knew exactly what he was doing. It was a premeditated gesture, calculated to humiliate and terrorize her. An attempt to instill order into a world gone wrong (Roy 246).The later explanation conveys an understanding of societys views and rules concerning the relationship between the Untouchables and Touchables and how th eir mother had broken those rules, whereas before they had only seen the cruelty of the policemans action. They are now able to see the action from the policemans and societys point of view. This level of thought and insight are evidence that the narrator is more mature and knowledgeable of the way that society works. Thus, the narrator has changed from a naive, ignorant child to a person with a more mature mind and an understanding of society.Trying to find the similarities and differences between these two seemingly different works reminds me of the following quote by Virginia Woolf: It would be a thousand pities if women wrote like men for if two sexes are quite inadequate, considering the vastness and variety of the world, how should we manage with one only? Ought not education to bring out and fortify the differences rather than the similarities? For we have too much likeness as it is Although this comment refers to the differences between the writing styles of men and wome n, its message can also be applied to the different cultural writing styles that exist as well. The ability of both authors to utilize the unique qualities of their writing styles to create distinctly different childlike narratives serving different purposes are evidence of their creativity and innovation. As we study the characteristics, purpose, and effectiveness of one writing style versus another, we should also take the time to celebrate the rich diversity and variety in the different language styles that exist around the world.Works CitedFaulkner, William. Ottoman Disadvantages and its Implications on The Siege of...

Under Suleiman the Magnificent the Ottoman Empire was a force to be reckoned with, it ruled the Middle East and Suleiman was quickly realizing his goal of advancing into Europe. However in 1529 a major military upset in the Austrian city of Vienna would halt the Islamic Ottoman expansion and save Europe from the possibility of Ottoman control. However this might not had been the case if it were not for several key disadvantages the Ottoman Empire had against the Viennese. Suleiman the Magnificent’s defeat during the siege of Vienna, 1529, was caused by poor weather conditions, chaos and disorganization amongst the Ottoman ranks, and a much stronger Viennese defense than was anticipated. On May 10, 1529 Sultan Suleiman left Istanbul on†¦show more content†¦This divided Hungary into two states, Royal Hungary and Ottoman Hungary, this division lasted until 1700. In the spring of 1529 Suleiman the Magnificent began to construct his massive army in Ottoman Bulgaria, his objective is to conquer and secure control over all of Hungary and eliminate the threat posed by Ferdinand I and the Holy Roman Empire. Estimates of the size of Suleiman’s army vary vastly from around 100,000 men to well over 300,000. The army also consisted of many units of Sapahi, the elite Ottoman Calvary, and thousands and thousands of Janissaries, an extremely well trained Ottoman fighting force. With such a vast group moving all at once there were certain inherent difficulties the Ottomans faced. The biggest of these would be the sheer chaos caused by the disorganization. Desertion was particularly rampant amongst the Ottoman forces and with the disorganization it was nearly impossible to properly distribute resources, malnourishment was a big problem because of the difficulty of acquiring food. This would mark a major disadvantage of the Ottoman morale; it diminished their will to fight, and thus, their will to win. Suleiman launched his campaign on May 10th, because this was so late in the year, the weather was almost immediately a problem. The spring rains associated with that area of Europe caused flooding and bridge wash outs were very common, this barley allowed to troops to leave

Muslim Women Vs. Medi Who Is The Real Terrorist - 2362 Words

Mohammed Miah Professor Dowd ENWR 105/E4-3 9 December 2014 Muslim Women vs. the Media: Who is the Real Terrorist? Are Muslim women across the world victims of the religion that they follow or are they serious victims of the media? For years, people have misconceived how women of the Islamic faith live their lives, and those who are victimized cannot even get the opportunity to speak their minds about their own lives to justify how the media has been portraying them. Society today has varying views on the subject, with some disagreeing with the media, while others are in complete support of the media; they truly believe that Muslim women are indeed victims. However, the media has only desecrated the truth of the lives of Muslim women by†¦show more content†¦When she stated, â€Å"They did not always have an opportunity to speak for themselves,† she was referring to the Muslim women in Islam dominated countries with people seeing them as victims of a patriarchal society where they cannot voice their opinions without having to s uffer from a punishment. Also, because the images within the media showed women wearing burqas, which are also worn by Muslim women in America, people in the West see them as victims who are just crying out for help. It is not the social norm to wear a veil in the West because people believe in liberation when it comes to clothing, even if certain clothes may be terrifyingly revealing. They are unaware of the Islamic beliefs and that in countries, such as Afghanistan, the women accept the veil because it is part of their religion. Muslims follow rules and regulations that were divinely written within the Quran, and the burqa, which is considered to be a hijab (a veil/covering), is outlined within the Quran as follows: And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornm ent except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands fathers, their sons, their husbands sons, their

Learning About Other Cultures Essay Example For Students

Learning About Other Cultures Essay I decided to go to the Indian cultural event. Truthfully, I chose this one because of the food. Indian food is probably to most unique to me and the way it is made just amazes me. I also figured this would be very colorful. Colors can express someones personality or how they are feeling. I would not consider this to be a great way to learn a new culture. It comes off as shallow and conceded. It’s like judging a book by its cover. I always like learning new things. I took a global citizenship course this semester to just broaden my horizons on new global topics. I do have to say that curiosity did get to me when my roommates first brought this up to me when I was at home. I have to say I did not learn too much about this culture. It did further my understanding with their dance and culture. I did learn that the cow is sacred and holy. You are not to eat it. They worship other deities. For instance, there are three main traditions in Hinduism: Shaivism, Vaishnavism, and Shaktism. The deities are Shiva, Vishnu, and the most important Shakti (Devi). The most interesting thing to me in a culture is who they worship and why. Hinduism can have a large number of personal Ishvaras or gods. I also learned that traditional Indian food is insanely spicy. I have a deeper respect for their culture and traditions from going to this. I learned that they have the most populated country on Earth. They make do with what they have. They do not have some of the luxuries we have in America. They do have a beautiful culture though. They respect each others religion. I believe it is important to explore and learn different cultures in college because we are becoming a world that works with one another. We can’t assume things about a different culture when we don’t truly know. For instance, I learned that real Chinese food is nowhere near the American stylized Chinese food we have. We have to be more culturally aware of each other. Other ways to seek out experiences in college would be by asking around. I learned about this one from my friends at Atwood. There are also links that I learned a few things on. The one that was posted with this assignment helped me look at other cultural events for this and next semester. Some key ways to increasing diversity in the world is take a class on it. I have learned so much in my global citizenship class it is crazy. Make new friends with people from different cultures. Ask them to teach you some things. One of my roommates and now best friend is Filipino and her traditions are different but very cool. Watch the news. You can see how we are affecting other countries or vice versa. I love to watch and see what is happening in Africa and Asia right now with the crisis. I will be working in a nursing field where I will be helping people of all cultures and working with them. I have to be culturally aware in the future. It will also help me get to know people better and some things not to do, like never touch a Hmong female on top of her head, it is considered disrespectful. It is little things like that that can make my job much easier to handle.

Acts of Terrorism free essay sample

An investigation into the reasons that acts of terror are committed. This paper explores the motivations behind acts of terror. It is written in the light of the September 11th attack on the USA in 2001 and it studies recent acts of terrorists both in the United States and elsewhere in the world. It focuses on the personality of Osama Bin Laden and what he symbolizes for the American people. A great deal has been written about terrorism since 11 September 2001, but this should not blind us to the fact that terrorism is hardly a new phenomenon. Although it is hard to believe that there is anyone in the world who is not now more aware of the possible reach and effects of terrorism than they were six months ago, if we are to come to a better understanding of the ways in which terrorists operate and the basic human psychology of terrorism than we must take a longer view of the phenomenon (McDermott 2002). With the acquisition of Webjouster, CanGo is quickly garnering a major position in entertainment e-commerce. Company CEO Liz Bennet said, â€Å" the move is a natural progression for the company. †. Business Strategy Analysis During this critical evolution it is vitally important to remember that planning by participation with key members creates a common focus, commitment and ownership, clarifies operational challenges, determines priorities and sets benchmarks for milestones, along with providing a pathway to success. (Maloney, Boulay, 1998) This is a fundamental element of becoming a successful business. Many decisions must be made that will shape a business’ future and structure the way it operates. This is especially true when developing the Mission, Vision and Values statement. This is just one part of the Strategic Management Process. The Strategic Management Process is a three tiered process consisting of the Formulation, Implementation and Evaluation approach to promote successful organizational performance. Team BEHS and key CanGo leadership personnel have evaluated CanGo’s strategic plans for short, medium and long-term success. We have discovered that the strategic planning process has been conducted in a haphazard and emergent fashion. Using Team BEH’s proven track record and solid strategic planning processes, we have developed clear and concise implementation plans to support CanGo’s goals for business success. This will set a course of action that will guide CanGo’s short-term objectives and long-term goals. Managerial Assessment CanGo is an organization filled with skilled employees and dedicated management personnel. These components are the foundation of quality when used to maximum effectiveness. Successful companies also have clear identification of the organizational structure. A companys organizational structure determines how business decisions are made and implemented when this is indistinct or missing chaos can ensue. This is a major managerial dilemma our analysis of CanGo has discovered. Today’s most successful companies understand the importance of quality leadership and standardized processes. Team BEHS uses time proven framework and philosophies when engaging our clients regarding quality management and leadership. Processes such as Total Quality Management (TQM), International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9000 and Deming’s Approach to Continuous Improvement are all part of our collaborative managerial assessment process. Employee empowerment, teamwork, process control, continuous improvement, customer focused management, and statistical methods and techniques are instrumental in successfully implementing total quality management (TQM) (Evans, Lindsay, 2007). These concepts as well as many others such as; Deming’s 14 Points and Theory of Profound Knowledge are key components to the BEHS training symposiums. BEHS symposiums are designed to meet the needs of corporations such as CanGo that may require assistance with understanding quality leadership and customer focus. We also work with management regarding techniques to mitigate employee conflict, improve leader-/subordinate relationships and increase employee motivation through implementation of a sound appraisal and reward system. Finally, we will look at your organizational structure and company make up. Based on a thorough assessment of organizational structure, control and governance, and strategy and structure growth patterns Team BEHS will work with and the CanGo management team towill develop a comprehensive plan that to best guide growth and profit is the number one priroity. Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities Threats (SWOT) Analysis A SWOT Analysis is a valuable business tool used to evaluate a company’s Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats involved in a project or in a business venture. It involves specifying the objective of the business venture or project and identifying the internal and external factors that are favorable and unfavorable to achieve that objective. Team BEHS conducted an internal analysis (strengths and weaknesses) of costs, finances, market share and resources available based on the financial data provided by CanGo. Thorough evaluation was performed to determine if the organization can has the resources to move into new markets and provide a justification by an operational cost analysis. Coordination with the operational, accounting and financial management teams was leveraged in order to build a unified consensus for implementing a strategy for moving into the online gaming market or perhaps some other market less risky. Further analysis was able to identify significant Threats (risks) and discuss the best courses of action to mitigate them. An external analysis (opportunities and threats) was also performed on the online gaming market. According to a leading market research company, a recent report has stated that online gaming participation has increased 10 percent since 2009, and the number of digital downloads for games has increased 20 percent. Every year there is significant growth. CanGo’s marketing ideas have valid merit and present an excellent opportunity for future company expansion. A brief synopsis of Team BEHS’ SWOT analysis can be found below in Table 1. Based on these findings we have come up with several business proposals that can be found in the Recommendations section of this document. Table 1: SWOT Analysis StrengthsWeaknesses †¢Existing online market share is booming †¢CanGo witnessed exponential growth in the book, CD and DVD video business †¢Continued fast growth is forecast †¢Smart employees†¢Limited investment capitol †¢Communication is non-existent †¢Limited facilities †¢Organization is dysfunctional †¢Leadership is lacking †¢Strategic Plans are non-existent OpportunitiesThreats †¢IPO will open up much needed cash for new market investments †¢Expand product line †¢Enter online gaming market †¢Implement hardware/software sales and MP3/CD/DVD downloads for individuals †¢Possibility for global expansion †¢Work simultaneously with another gaming network†¢Large companies in the same market may have a competitive advantage †¢Fierce lower cost competitors †¢Economy †¢Internet security and bandwidth †¢Newer and changing technology †¢International piracy Market Analysis America’s entertainment software industry creates a wide array of computer and video games to meet the demands and tastes of audiences as diverse as our nation’s population. Today’s gamers include millions of Americans of all ages and backgrounds. In fact, more than two-thirds of all American households play games. This vast audience is fueling the growth of this multi-billion dollar industry and bringing jobs to communities across the nation (Horston, 2010). The U. S. Video Gaming Market recorded a record $5. 53 Billion in the month of December 2009. Meanwhile, the online gaming market has emerged as the most dynamic and transforming segment of the overall gaming industry in China. It has been witnessing a series of developments driven by increasing Internet and broadband penetration, double-digit growth in the number of online gaming users, rapid product development and commercialization. (RNCOS, 2009) Research was also conducted with online gaming hardware and the statistics state that 85% of users prefer the PC. Among non-PC systems, the Xbox 360 dominated for the third year in a row as the top system for online gaming with 48% of the market. Interestingly, the Wii and the PS3 are in a near tie, with about 30 percent of online gamers reporting that they use both systems. However, it is important to point out that the PS3 increased 10 percentage points since last year. The average hours per week breakdown with the top three systems are the Xbox 360 (7. 3 hrs), PC (6. 6 hrs) and PS3 (5. 8 hrs) (Riley, 2010). â€Å"The number of online gaming paid subscribers, which totaled 19. 4 million at the end of last year, and will more than double to 44. 5 million by the end of 2014. The increase in usage will be driven by the rise in digital distribution of online games as opposed to retail boxed sales, along with an increase in broadband adoption† (Sachoff, 2010). Competitive Analysis Competition in this industry will be fierce as there are numerous companies providing online gaming services. With an estimated $5 billion in revenue in game subscription by 2015, the return on investment will be very profitable and a further testimony to the large market for online gaming (Sachoff, 2010). Online gaming service providers offer game downloads, free online game play, online gamer community chat rooms, club memberships, prizes for playing, games, and links to the other popular online games. To be competitive, CanGo should provide these services as a basic subscription package. Technology is about progression, and online gaming technology is no exception. Our research has indicated that a 3D gaming platform will outperform the conventional 2D platforms currently being used by the industry. 3D technology provides users the capability to view images in dimensional realism. 2D gaming only allows the consumer to view the image of an object in one view with a flat surface. Throughout the history of 3D rendering technology, you will notice that the 3d render has more ability to create higher quality rendered models, shadows, and light than the real time render used in 3d game industry. The main reason is that the real time render depends on the computer display card capabilities (www. graphicmania. net). With today’s technology, computer display hardware allows creating higher quality 3D games with semi-real objects and scenes. In our assessment CanGo would be prudent to implement the 3D gaming system. There are technological requirements that must be considered such as bandwidth allocation and network and physical security measures. The cost of a high quality 3D gaming system will far exceed those of the standard 2D gaming system. BEHS evaluated the associated risks and added cost of a 3D gaming platform and consider them as solid returns on investment. A 3D online gaming system is a concrete opportunity for CanGo’s expansion efforts to carve out a point of difference in the marketplace. CanGo’s mission is to create a market that will not only meet but exceed customer expectations, as such CanGo must carry out as the top online gaming company and one in which customers will use for service. We developed an extensive analysis of alternatives (AoA) (four different options), then selected the one that best meets the desired goals of CanGo, based on variety of input factors. The baseline used was predicated on the services offered by the main competitors in the industry; with the intended resolution being CanGo providing its customer base with unique and exciting gaming experience. Team BEHS reviewed industry standards and conducted surveys of avid online gaming participants and developed a combination of the latest technologies as seen in Table 2. Our Analysis showed Sony to be the only competitor with Cross-game Voice Chat, while no other company provided â€Å"iChat-like† video Capabilities. Cross-game Voice Chat allows users to chat with their opponents from their gaming console’s internet connection while playing the online game. Mind you, this is strictly a voice capability. What will set CanGo apart from the competition is the use of iChat-like video conferencing and chat tool (much like Oovoo or Skype) for Windows, loaded with useful, powerful tools that make it a viable alternative for small work groups using conference calls and screen-sharing applications. (Rosenblatt, 2008) Our research has shown this technology is now mature enough to make the transition into the video gaming arena. This service can make CanGo the leader in the market because others currently do not have this feature available. This alone should generate enough revenue for CanGo to be prosperous for many years. Table 2: Capabilities Assessment Financial Analysis CanGo announced October sales are expected to increase 500% and addressed needs to immediately find ways to accommodate more personnel, trucks, warehouse space, shipping receiving and implementing truck satellite tracking technology. More resources and finances are required from CanGo, which will affect the online gaming effort. The IPO is expected to bring in $130,000,000 in revenue. This funding can propel CanGo to a new echelon. CanGo’s financial pricing objectives should strategically aim to achieve  profitability by the second year of introducing the gaming products. According to entertainment media industry analyst Wanda Meloni, â€Å"previous console development has been between $3 5 million per platform. She estimates that the average cost of making one game for one platform is $10 million while multiplatform releases clock in at $18 $28 million. † (Glasser, 2010) An important aspect for CanGo to consider in entering the gaming market is developing games for Facebook, the iPhone and other social media or mobile gaming platforms because it is far cheaper thanks to lower production costs. The cost of developing social media/casual games is estimated at $30,000 $300,000 in a six month development cycle and mobile/iPhone games at $5,000 $20,000 thousand with four months of development. (Glasser, 2010) More developers are expected to streamline development, and switch up distribution models for ways to include micro-transactions. The key word for CanGo is to focus on Return-On- Investment (ROI). CanGo should consider web driven flash games that takes 3 to 5 developers approximately 6 weeks to roll out a new game at a cost of about $25-50K. Leasing server bandwidth costs approximately $3. 50 to $5. 50 per Gigabit of throughput depending on the vendor and traffic location. Strategic Planning The Team BEHS strategic plan acts as the basis for programmatic investments and resource allocations. The strategic plan is the roadmap for allocating resources, both financial and non-financial, to ensure we are focusing our efforts pertaining toon activities that strategically enable CanGo to achieve its mission. Our strategic planning is guided by four principles: †¢Educational Needs Are Primary- Supporting and valuing a culture of learning in the workplace is important because ongoing education learning is essential toneeded to survive in a time of increasing competition. The work-place is the key area site infor the developmingent of generic skills such as; communication, problem-solving, teamwork, information technology and customer service skills (GaziI Mahabubul Alam, 2009) †¢. Growth Through Focus- The engines of growth are narrowing your current focus, Team BEHS recommends lessfewer brands, smallerfewer categories, and fewer markets for newly expanding businesses such as CanGo. Simplicity, commonsimple vision, simplified execution, and straightforwardsimpler organizational designs are key ingredients to driving profitable expansion. †¢Shared Governance- Ppartnership, equity, accountability, and ownership are all critical elements of shared decision making every employee feel like he or she is â€Å"part manager† with a personal stake in the success of the organization. †¢Organizational Development- Our proven process is carefully planned and implemented to benefit any organization deliveringpaying particular attention to Profitability, productivity, morale and quality of work life for all employees. Practicing our four basic principles of strategic planning guarantees that your strategic direction is preserved, stakeholders will have ownership in the plan’s success, and that CanGo’s decision making body is held accountable for achieving its desired mission through an annual assessment and audit process. Through continual communications, and transparency successful operations are achieved.

The Keyboards Every Writer Should Be Using - Freewrite Store

The Keyboards Every Writer Should Be Using - Freewrite Store As a writer, you’ve probably used a variety of different keyboards, and  know that they’re not all created equal. Keyboards come in many different styles and choosing the right one can have a big effect on your typing speed, comfort, and accuracy. Some have traditional solid, clicky keys with switches inside them, some have modern flat, silent keys, and some fall halfway in between. What kind of keyboard should you be using? In this article, we’ll look at the three main types of keyboards, what makes them different from each other, and which one is likely to be best for you. Membrane keyboards These days, most desktop keyboards are membrane keyboards. Their name derives from their construction. Rather than each key being independent with an inbuilt mechanical switch, all the keys sit on top of a single plastic membrane that houses the electronic circuitry. Between the keys and the circuitry is a rubber sheet with domes that give the keys their characteristic bounce-back when you type. They’re popular because they’re light, cheap to produce, are relatively spill-resistant and give you a bit of tactile feedback. Chiclet keyboards If you’re typing on a modern laptop, chances are you have an island-style keyboard, popularly known as a chiclet keyboard because the square keys with radial corners look somewhat like Chiclets chewing gum. While there’s usually a membrane beneath these keyboards too, the rubber domes that are present beneath higher-profile keys are either omitted altogether or replaced with scissor switches or butterfly switches, which enable the use of very low, flat keys that can fit into thinner and thinner devices. Mechanical keyboards The main difference with a mechanical keyboard is that each key is a separate component with its own switch and metal spring. There are many different kinds of switches that can be used in mechanical keyboards, and each type gives a different user experience with varying levels of travel (the distance you have to press the key for it to register a stroke), bump (the level of tactile feedback) and noise (the click the key makes when depressed). Most mechanical keyboards contain Cherry switches. While their patent for the switch design has recently expired, opening the way for other manufacturers to imitate it, Cherry is still considered the industry leader in keyboard switch technology. Their MX switch, which was first introduced to the market in 1983, is one of the most successful ever made. Cherry switches come in different colors, and each color has its own set of characteristics. The full range is wide, but there are three main variants. Cherry MX Blue These switches have a tactile bump and a loud click that occurs when the keystroke registers, and are favoured by those who like a more typewriter-esque experience. They only need to be depressed to the click point to activate the keystroke but require more force than the Red or Brown variants. Cherry MX Red These switches are favoured by gamers because they have no tactile bump or noise and require less force to press, which is an advantage when you’re engaged in a fast-paced cyber-battle. Cherry MX Brown These are an excellent all-rounder switch – they require the lighter actuation force of the Reds but have the nice tactile bump of the Blues. They lack the Blues’ loud click, however, making them perfect for use in offices or coffee shops where you don’t want to annoy those around you with a constant flurry of clacky keystrokes. Why mechanical keyboards are better for writers People who convert to mechanical keyboards often become lifelong fans because of the satisfying typing experience and range of benefits they get from using them. What makes mechanical keyboards so good for writers? 1. Accuracy There’s nothing worse than trying to type fast on a chiclet keyboard where all the keys are flat and close together, and you’re forever hitting the key beside the one you want with the edge of your finger. Like the keys on a traditional typewriter, mechanical keyboard keycaps tend to be nicely contoured to help your finger naturally hit the centre of the key as you type, resulting in fewer typos. 2. Comfort Mechanical keyboards require less force to type, and you don’t need to press the keys all the way down – only to the point of the click or the tactile bump. Membrane keyboards require you to â€Å"bottom out† each key complete the circuit, something that people often describe as a heavy, â€Å"mushy† typing experience, leading to fatigue in the fingers, hands and wrists. 3. Speed Contoured, more responsive keys naturally lead to faster typing. Another benefit of mechanical keyboards is n-key rollover. Rollover is a technical term for how many simultaneous keypresses a keyboard can register accurately. Membrane keyboards often have a much lower rollover which results in â€Å"ghosting†. That’s when you’re typing flat out, your keystrokes overlap, and your keyboard registers extra keystrokes, resulting in additional â€Å"ghost† letters. Keyboards with n-key rollover can accurately register every keypress, regardless of how many keys you strike simultaneously, meaning you don’t have to slow down to improve accuracy or stop to fix ghosting typos. 4. Durability Mechanical keyboards last a lot longer than their membrane counterparts. Rubber dome switches tend to lose their bounce after about five million keystrokes, and you’ll notice that some keys will become unreliable or stop working completely. 9.Define the concepts of risk and threat and discuss the statement Can Essay

9.Define the concepts of risk and threat and discuss the statement Can you have Risk without Threat - Essay Example The whole idea can be also defined as: the ability of a certain system to protect all its information with respect to discretion and veracity .Another point to ponder upon is Note that the scope of this second definition includes system resources, which include CPUs, disks, and programs, in addition to information. A brawny security protocol addresses all three of these areas. Take, for example, Netscapes SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) protocol. It has enabled a detonation in ecommerce which is really about conviction (or more precisely, about the lack of trust). SSL overcomes the deficiency of conviction between transacting parties by ensuring discretion all the way through encryption, veracity through checksums, and substantiation by means of server certificates (see Chapter 15 of Unix System Security Tools). Access control -- Make sure that users admittance is only to those resources and services that they are permitted to access and that competent users are not denied access to services that they lawfully expect to receive These supplementary rudiments dont neatly put together into a particular definition. From one perception, the concepts of seclusion, discretion, and security are quite distinct and possess different attributes. Privacy is a property of individuals; discretion is a property of data; and security is a property assigned to computer hardware and software systems. From a realistic perspective, the concepts are interwoven. A system that does not sustain data discretion or entity privacy could be tentatively or even precisely "secure," but it probably wouldnt be wise to systematize it anywhere in the real world. Risk avoidance -- A security essential that starts with questions like: Does my organization or business engage in activities that are too risky? Do we really need an unobstructed Internet connection? Do we really need to computerize that secure business process? Should we really standardize on a

Caterpillar Value Chain Strategies - Assignment Example Through transforming itself to be more focused, responsive, variable and a resilient enterprise, that can connect their businesses end-to-end with suppliers at the one end, and customers at the other, by fusing the best business practices and technology, Caterpillar Inc have successfully introduced accelerated value creation. Caterpillar Inc is the worlds leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines, and industrial gas turbines. The company is a technology leader in construction, transportation, mining, forestry, energy, logistics, electronics, financing and electric power generation. In 2005, Caterpillar posted sales and revenues of $36 billion and a profit of $2.8 billion, maintaining its position as an International supplier and leading U.S. exporter. Currently Caterpillar has more than 85000 employees in its different businesses and divisions world wide. The current success achieved by Caterpillar was no mere coincidence, but due to the strong influence and direction set by its current and former CEO's in periods were Caterpillar lost ground against competitors and registered huge losses. Many different factors influenced the productions, sales and operations during these periods. Factors such as and overvalued dolor, collapse of major markets, union strikes and an inefficient supply chain. To be able to better understand the factors that forced Caterpillar to introduce major changes we need to review each of these trouble periods individually. 1980's Caterpillar has already established an international network of manufacturers, suppliers and dealers after being in the business for more than 75 years. But by 1982 Caterpillar was in trouble with over $1 billion dolor from 1982 through to 1984, with an annual sales figure of approximately $5 billion annually. Factors that contributed to the losses were an overvalued dolor, the concurrent collapse of world markets, a crunching labor strike and the emergence of a fast growing and highly productive competitor, Komatsu. External factors can be seen as an end to a decade long growth in the demand for construction machinery and declining oil prices, led to a decline in investment in the oil exploration and mining operations. The strong dollar versus other currencies resulted in a cost disparity for Caterpillar in relation with their competition and Komatsu an relatively unknown Japanese firm won the market share at the expense of Caterpillar. Komatsu could under price Caterpillar by up t o 30% due to a much higher productivity level. During this time Caterpillar reacted to the downturn in the market by reducing labor cost through freezing employee's wages. This resulted in a national U.S. strike, led by labor unions, which caused huge losses. 1990's In the early 1990's Caterpillar yet again found itself in trouble due to the rise in the value of the dollar and slowing down of demand in construction equipment. At the same time Caterpillar was doing very badly at the stock exchange, limiting the access to capital to support its operations. The CEO of the time took drastic actions to reorganize the company and to yet again cut

Fishing Disaster :: Environment Ecosystem Environmental Essays

Fishing Disaster Background: The ocean around the rocky shores of Newfoundland were once so full of cod that explorer John Cabot marveled in 1497 that they virtually blocked his ship. In the centuries to follow, fish became the one of the only reasons anyone ever came to Newfoundland, or stayed. Cod was the center of life in the Canadian Maritimes from the beginning. Starting in the 1950's, Huge European trawlers began to travel across the Atlantic to fish the waters off Newfoundland. Some refered to these super-ships as "Fish Factories". With the increased effort by these distant-water fleets, catches of northern cod increased in the late 1950s and early 1960s and peaked at just over 800,000 tons by 1968. However, by 1975 the Candian Government realized the devastating effect this was having on its fish populations and closed its waters to foriegn fishing boats. Although this temporarily staved off the growing crisis, European intervention had changed the nature of Canadian fishing, leading to the development of Canadian owned super-trawlers. Disaster Strikes: Throughout the 1980s, the annual catch of Canada's northern cod fishing fleet hovered around the 250,000 tonnes mark, as the Canadian government kept promoting more investment. Newfoundland's small-scale, inshore cod fishermen, however, were voicing concerns long before anyone else that the abundance of the northern cod population was not as healthy as scientists were reporting. Contradictory to scientific data, traditional inshore fishermen in Newfoundland began to notice declining catches before the mid-1980s. By 1986 the scientists also realized that the stock was declining, and by 1988 had recommended the total allowable catch be cut in half. Instead of acting immediately, in a precautionary manner to protect dwindling fish stocks by substantially reducing catch quotas at the first signs of overfishing, the federal government delayed conservation action, choosing instead quite moderate reductions of the total allowable catch beginning in 1989. It wasn't until 1990, following several years of analysis and re-analysis of data from stock surveys (without simultaneously reducing catch quotas) that the Independent Review of the state of the Northern Cod stock concluded that the population, the biomass, the spawning population, and the spawning biomass of the Northern Cod were all in decline and that fishing-related mortality was at dangerously high levels. By 1992, the biomass estimate for northern cod was the lowest ever measured. The Canadian Minister of Fisheries and Oceans had no choice but to declare a ban on fishing northern cod.

Case Study in Abnormal Psychology Essay

The study of any case in Abnormal Psychology views multiple aspects of self-concept and various behaviors and is the foundation of defining normal and abnormal behaviors. In the complex process of defining and exploring the vast concepts of behavior multi faceted information must be incorporated. Individual behaviors, perspectives, attitudes, and personal identity reveal the internal workings of how specific aspects of life coincide to determine ones concept of normal and abnormal behavior. Throughout history individuals have sought to find out the difference between normal and abnormal perspectives and the purpose for ones existence thus it is only through self realization that society and the people within can find this answer. The exploration of behavior and the many areas that humans search to find a deeper understanding of exactly what the concept of normal behavior leads to a profound investigation of internal and external aspect of life which shapes every angle of one’s self definition. As previous generations have sought to find the answers to this important life question it is the purpose of this paper to continue that great quest into the most definitive goal of society, which is the comprehension of the many, interlinked experiences that define self. The various aspects of behavior and attitudes such as personality traits, abilities, physical characteristics, beliefs, values, goals, and roles help psychologist define normal and abnormal behavior. During the early stages of life children develop an organized and multilevel perspective of information about themselves in the process of acquiring the ability to understand the relation between self and the behavior. Behavior is present in children and centered on many levels of concrete cognitive characteristics, such as physical characteristics and skills. While the focus and perspectives of behavior change from childhood  to middle childhood, behavioral concepts become more integrated and differ as the child engages in social comparison and more clearly perceives the self as consisting of internal, external, and psychological characteristics (Self Concept, 2010). The process of understanding behavior becomes more defined as individuals reach adolescence. It is during this developm ental stage of adolescence that individuals become increasingly aware of the presence and influence of the definition of behavioral characteristic through acquiring a broader perspective of new concepts such as abstract views of the world around them, new experiences with complex issues of cognitive mental representations or self-schemas, which direct the processing of self-relevant information. Social interaction is a key element of behavioral development in which individuals learn foundational skills that aid in the comprehension of self. Through interaction with peers individuals explore or investigate new aspects of self and social interaction by recognizing like interest with peers, social behaviors, emotional responses, and social learning and problem solving skills. These developmental building blocks teach individuals vital insights of self that can be incorporated throughout life such as the development of cooperation, social exchange, demonstrating and understanding empathy as well as experimenting with different roles with behavioral settings. Interaction with society is a defining factor in ones understanding of behavior and is the building block for future and present relationships and definition. Through these various interactions with society integral relationships shape the individuals connection to the world around them and in turn lead to stability within t he internal processes which determine the individual’s perspective of behavioral concept, self esteem, and self efficiency and aids the psychologist in treating an individual with behavioral problems. Definitive concepts that an individual must comprehend in addition to understanding in relation to the hierarchy of normal and abnormal behavior concept in order to understand the complexity of self and the role that individual plays within society. Behavior is by definition the positive or negative reactions to individuals’ society and towards oneself and is viewed as the internal evaluation of one’s self worth and value. It is clear that behavior is one of the fundamental aspects of development and self, a healthy perspective of one’s life must reflect positive values and  definitions of self in order for an individual to develop a healthy mental state. The totality of an individual’s comprehension regarding behavior is a valid developmental concept that must reflect all thoughts and feelings in relation to self and society (Paterson, 2010). Self efficiency describes an individual with confidence in his or her ability to think, understand information, self control, and a defined sense of self worth. It is an important aspect of development of perception to thoroughly understand the impact that these concepts of behavior have on an individual’s life and should be valued as priority (Paterson, 2010). Two distinct experiences that affect personal development are the values of personal beliefs and social factors. In a case study of children’s behavior parents instill values that have shaped the children’s’ perspective of many social and self perspectives. In this case the behaviors displayed by a child growing up in a lower middle class family in rural America was viewed by the parents as abnormal or normal, the child’s behavior in many factors are defined by what he or she has accomplish, and the belief or worth came from validation that he or she needed and that all other aspects of life were just reflections of what society viewed as normality. Over the years many the individuals’ behavior felt as if he or she did not really know that the displayed perspectives of behavior were being viewed as abnormal. Growing up the individual gained a new perspective of exactly what normality was and realized that many of the behaviors displayed were abnormal it was this behavioral awareness that lead to psychological help. When the individual entered high school more abnormal behaviors were displayed and societal definitions determined many of the treatments used by the psychologist. There is no other concept within psychology that shapes individuals as much as behavior. It is in understanding how one’s life is changed based on the situation and experiences, the behaviors and attitudes, and the internal sense of self worth that motivates individuals to step into a deep understanding of life.
